Mexico’s Volaris swings to $20 million profit in 1Q

Mexican ultra low-cost carrier (ULCC) Volaris has posted a first-quarter net profit of MXP306 million ($20.1 million), reversing a MXP370 million net loss for the 2014 March quarter.
“We continue to diversify our network and strengthen our unbundled product strategy, increasing our international presence and growing non-ticket revenues while maintaining cost discipline,” Volaris CEO Enrique Beltranena said. “Volaris’ strong performance for the first three months of 2015 are evidence of [our] hard work and excellent execution … following a very challenging year.”
Volaris’ total operating revenue in the first-quarter was MXP3.77 billion, up 35.8% year-over-year (YOY) from MXP2.78 billion reported in 1Q 2014. Volaris’ non-ticket revenue in the first-quarter grew 64.6% YOY to MXP 846 million, compared to MXP514 million in the 2014 first-quarter. Non-ticket revenue per passenger was up 41.6% YOY during the quarter, to MXP337 (from $18.20 spent per-passenger in 1Q 2014 to $22.11 in 1Q 2015).
Total operating expenses were MXP3.42 billion, up 4.9% YOY from MXP3.26 billion in the year-ago quarter. The carrier’s operating income for the quarter came to MXP346 million, reversing the MXP488 million operating loss Volaris in 1Q 2014.
Volaris’ passenger traffic was up 9.9% YOY to 2.44 billion RPMs on an 11% YOY capacity expansion to 3 billion ASMs. The carrier’s first-quarter passenger load factor came to 80%, down 0.7 point from the 2014 first quarter. Volaris booked 2,511,000 passengers during the first quarter, up 16.2% YOY. First-quarter yield increased 17.5% YOY to 7.9 US cents. CASM ex-fuel grew 8.1% YOY to 5.1 US cents. Volaris’ fuel costs in the 2015 first-quarter fell 18.3% YOY to MXP 1.1 billion
Volaris ended 2014 with a full-year net profit of MXP605 million, more than doubling its 2013 net result (MXP265 million). Volaris’ fourth-quarter 2014 net profit was MXP703 million, reversing the carrier’s MXP97 million net loss in 4Q 2013.
