European flights to be hit by general strike Tuesday

By Victoria Moores | November 13, 2012

European flights face a possible disruption Tuesday as 40 unions from 23 countries plot a Europe-wide action to protest austerity measures and job cuts.
The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) claims that austerity measures create a “social emergency,” prompting it to call for a “European Day of Action and Solidarity.”
A number of major European airlines, including British Airways (BA), easyJet (U2), Ryanair (FR) and Vueling (VY), have warned of possible disruption.
Strikes will be held in Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy. Protests are also planned in Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Poland, Romania and Slovenia. Other countries—including Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Scandinavia and the Netherlands—are also planning  an action in a show of solidarity with those worst affected by the cutbacks, according to the ETUC.
VY said it is expecting “significant restrictions all day” and has detailed plans to operate minimum service.
Likewise, U2 warned of delays, rescheduling and possible cancellations. The action will affect different countries at different times. U2 has cancelled 26 flights. “We continue to monitor the Portuguese situation; however, at this time we have not made any amendments to our flying program through Portugal,” U2 said.
FR has not yet cancelled any flights; however, it said delays are inevitable and flight cancellations remain a possibility. FR added: “Following a Eurocontrol conference call, air traffic controllers from Spain and Portugal have confirmed that they will not be participating in the any strike action and on this basis Ryanair has decided at this stage not to cancel flights scheduled to operate on Nov. 14.”
