Over the weekend, I was hearing reports originating in Mexico that American Airlines was planning to invest in bankrupt Mexicana Airlines. One report said American would put in $45 million in equity, offer a $105 million credit line and make another $350 million available for a second credit line.
Not true, said American Airlines says. As in really, really, absolutely, totally untrue.
"It was not true, not accurate," American Airlines spokesman Sean Collins said Monday.
Reportedly, someone issued a press release to Mexican media announcing the investment, with a partner. Newspapers reported it. A Mexicana employee representative expressed happiness.
Mexicana, American's Oneworld partner in Mexico, grounded its airplanes late last summer and filed for bankruptcy protection in Mexico and the United States. Attempts to revive it have not succeeded.
Its collapse left American without a Mexican partner. American and regional partner American Eagle fly to a number of Mexican cities, but could really use a codesharing partner out of Mexico City and other major Mexican cities.
Meanwhile, U.S. and Mexican airlines have been filling the void left behind. For example, Aeromexico and Volaris, two Mexican carriers, have recently begun flying the Guadalajara-Fresno, Calif., route that Mexicana vacated.
